Just like every year, Cape Cod volleyball was represented well again this season.
Barnstable (Div. 1) and Bourne (Div. 5) both reached the MIAA State Final game to end their seasons. St. John Paul II made the Elite Eight as the 24th seed as they upset No. 9 Innovation Academy (Round of 32) and No. 8 Easthampton (Round of 16).
Dennis-Yarmouth, Nantucket, and Cape Tech made the Sweet Sixteen, while Falmouth, Sandwich, Sturgis West and Mashpee also made the postseason.
Here are the players that helped their respective teams be successful this season. Presenting the girls volleyball All-Scholastic 2023 team.
First Team

Molly Fredo, Barnstable
The senior outside hitter led the Red Hawks in kills with 296 kills (9th in Division 1). Fredo had double digit kills in 19 of her 25 matches.
She was named a Cape and Islands League All-Star, and the Massachusetts Volleyball Coaches Association (MAVCA) Player of the Week. She finished her high school career with 556 kills.
“She is an MAVCA All-State player for a reason,” Barnstable head coach Tom Turco said. “She has an amazing court presence and is productive.”
Her favorite moments from her last high school season were winning the semi-finals in a sweep versus Franklin, playing in the state finals (against Newton North), and beating Newton North (3-2) in the regular season.
Outside of sports, Fredo is a part of programs like Best Buddies, Future Problem Solving, DECA, National Honors Society, and Chinese National Honors Society. Fredo will be going to college with a Biology/Health Science major to become a physician assistant.

Molly Gleason, Barnstable
As a junior outside hitter, Gleason led the team in digs (261), service points (229) and was third in kills with 192. She recorded her 500th career dig this season and was selected as a Cape and Islands League All-Star.
Her most memorable moments were making it to the Division 1 state finals. beating Newton North in five sets (regular season), sweeping Franklin in the Final Four, and making it to the Division 1 state finals.
When she is not playing volleyball, Gleason also plays varsity basketball, runs track and field, and is a part of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Peer Mediation, Peer Leadership, and is a youth volleyball coach.

Logan Hurwitz, Barnstable
In her final season as a libero, Hurwitz had 518 serve receptions (first on team), 231 digs (second on team), 44 aces and 164 service points. She was selected as a MAVCA All-Tournament Team League All Star. Hurwitz finished her career as a three-year starter and finished with 1,433 career receptions, 678 digs, and 108 aces.
“Logan has been a productive and positive force in Barnstable’s success,” Turoc said. “The All-Tournament was reflective of her awesome performance in the five tournament games.”
Her favorite moment of the season was sweeping Franklin in the semis to make it to states for the first time since 2018. She is involved in Best Buddies, Hope Squad, and DECA. After graduation, she plans to study psychology.

Charlotte Sullivan, Barnstable
Sullivan ended her senior year as a middle hitter with one of her best seasons. She finished with 206 kills (second on team), 38 blocks (second on team), 61 aces (first on team), and a .259 hitting percentage (first on team) ,, which earned her a Cape and Islands League All-Star spot. She was recognized on the MAVCA All-Tournament team, including her season high 17 kills in the state finals. She finished her high school career with 444 kills, 89 blocks, and 70 aces.
Her most memorable moment was making it to states with her teammates. She is a part of the Cape Cod Ambassadors/Foster Care and a Youth Group. Sullivan has committed to continue her volleyball career at Bridgewater State University next fall, where she will study Early Childhood Education.

Sadie Wellbeloved, Barnstable
Wellbeloved ended her high school career as the State Player League MVP and the C and Islands League Atlantic MVP. The senior setter had 733 assists (second in state) and surpassed the 1,000 assist mark this season. She ended her career with 1,405 career assists.
“She led this team to the state finals for the 21st time. Hard working and productive player,” Turco said.
Her favorite moment was walking onto the court at states with her team and seeing how many fans were there to support Barnstable. Outside of the court, Wellbeloved works and is in the Yearbook Club. After graduation, she is going to school for business in Boston.

Elena Timo, Bourne
Timo is a senior captain setter and opposite hitter who has been on varsity the last three seasons. She ended her final high school season with 54 service aces, 107 kills, and 343 assists.
“Elena was instrumental as a senior captain in pulling the team together, setting the standards and holding the team accountable,” Bourne head coach David Moore said. “A very committed player who plans on continuing to play in a four-year college.”

Lily Russell, Bourne
As a sophomore Libero, Russell had 78 service aces, passed 426 serves, and had 502 digs.
“Liberos tend not to get a lot of attention in statistics, but without a very good libero/defensive specialist, a team could not perform at its optimum,” Moore said. “Lily was a primary passer and played in the left back position where the majority of attacks go. Lily is a very hard worker and pushes herself constantly.”

Vivian Castano, Dennis-Yarmouth
The junior setter finished her season with 47 kills, 156 digs, 472 assists, and had a 93.8% serving success. She is a three-year varsity starter and a three-time Cape and Islands League All-Star. For her career she has played 235 sets and accounted for 80 kills, 365 digs, 2,034 assists (89 assists away from the school record).
“Vivian plays one of the most demanding positions with great mental toughness, grace, and poise,” D-Y head coach Dru Sisson said. “She is a true leader for the court, controlling the offense, and seemingly always knows who the best option is to set the ball to. She maintains a high GPA, while playing high level volleyball.”
Her favorite moment from this season was when the Dolphins played against her club coach’s team. She also does spring track, Interact Club, church, Concert Band, and the National Honor Society.

Mariah Eaton, Dennis-Yarmouth
As a junior middle hitter, Eaton had 234 kills, a .231 hitting percentage, and 55 blocks. She is a three year varsity starter and a two-time Cape and Islands League All-Star. In 232 career sets played, she has 364 kills, a .213 hitting percentage, and 175 blocks.
“Mariah takes control of the net whether she is blocking or swinging,” Sisson said. “Defense isn’t just digging the ball. It’s also making sure that the ball does not cross over to the outside, and Mariah has mastered that. She has a great competitive nature, but is also uplifting to her teammates. Strong work ethic to constantly get better in the sport.”
Ellen Swanson, Dennis-Yarmouth
Swanson finished her senior season at libero with 47 aces, a 97.3% serving success, 397 digs and 437 serve receptions.
She finished her varsity career (327 sets) with 176 aces, a 95.6% serving success (highest in school history), 897 digs, 1047 serve receptions, and 201 kills. She was a five-year varsity starter, a three-time Cape and Islands League All-Star, and was Named to the MAVCA 2023 Div. 3 All-State team.
“Ellen is a coach’s dream,” Sisson said. “She is someone who can take control of a game when it matters most. Her defense and ability to read the game is incredible. She is a true leader on and off the court, contributing positive energy with a true humble nature about her.”
Her most memorable moment was beating Plymouth South in five sets after being down two sets. She helped out with the elementary school volleyball program after school occasionally when she was not on the court herself. Swanson plans to attend college after graduation.

Christina Femino, Falmouth
As a junior, two-year varsity setter, Femino had 40 aces, a 92.1% serving, and 322 assists this season.
“As a setter, she never lets a play end without super hustle and is consistently working with her hitters to make improvements,” Falmouth head coach Nicole Shea said.

Chloe Marrero, Nantucket
The senior outside hitter was an MVP last year and was one of the main contributors on offense for the Whalers this season. She showed off her offensive talent against Duuxbury with 37 kills.

The junior libero was an all-state last season as a sophomore and showed why this season. She had three games with over 40 digs against Bridgewater Raynham (46), Duxbury (45), and Nipmuc (43).

Yahely del Rosario Gomez, Nantucket
The senior setter knew how to find her teammates all season. She had 39 assists against Bridgewater Raynham, and 32 assists against Duxbury. Although she is a setter, in the first game of the season against St. John Paul II, she had 18 aces.
Molly Pulit, St. John Paul II
The senior captain and libero ended her season with five kills, 23 aces, 420 digs, and 14 assists. She was selected as the Cape and Islands League Co-MVP and a Cape and Islands League All-Star. She finished her varsity career in three seasons with 71 kills, 797 digs, 93 aces, 13 blocks, and 92 assists.
“Molly began her volleyball career here at JPII as a right side hitter her sophomore year, but took on the libero role this season,” JPII head coaches Shannon and Haley Kennedy-Cabral said. “Molly proved to be a well-rounded player, both offensively and defensively for JPII. Molly led her team with the dedication and drive they needed to make a deep playoff run.”
Her favorite moment of her final high school season was winning the first round of playoffs for the first time in program history and later getting to the Elite Eight. She is involved in the Student Council, NHS, community service, and is a Reach Out Student Ambassador. She plans to study nursing at a college/university in New England.

Zlata Alioshka, St. John Paul II
Alioshka is only a freshman setter, but is one of the captains for JPII and showed why. She finished with 51 kills, 67 aces, 164 digs, and 319 assists. She was selected as a Cape and Islands League All-Star.
“Zlata came into this season taking on a large role for the JPII Lions,” Shannon and Haley Kennedy-Cabral said. “Without hesitation, Zlata was able to take on this role and perform to the best of her ability each game. Despite being a freshman on this team, Zlata was able to play a competitive game and demonstrate that age doesn’t matter.”
Her most memorable moment was the Lions first playoff game of the year against Salem Academy. She is a part of the JPII yearbook, and Investment Club, and also attends math school.

Mia Mulcahy, Sandwich
The junior setter finished the season with 59 kills, 36 aces, 332 assists, and 139 digs. For her career, she has 708 assists, 49 aces, 71 kills, and 157 digs.
“Mia is our quarterback,” Sandwich head coach Giulia Leite said. “She gets to every single ball as fast as she can. She is very consistent in her serving and setting, rarely fouling the ball. Mia has a natural talent in volleyball.”
Her most memorable moment of the season was a five-set win over East Bridgewater.
“The whole team played really well and it was a really fun game to play,” Mulcahy said.
She is the president and founder of the Unified Volleyball Club, Class of 2025 Secretary, member of Mu Alpha Theta (Math National Honor Society), Science National Honor society, Best Buddies, Student Council, varsity softball, and Kindness for Cancer.

Brodie Gerlach, Sturgis West
The junior middle blocker did everything for the Navigators this season. She had 219 total kills (averaging 4.1 kills per set), a hitting percentage of 0.418, 158 points with 78 aces and a 90.8% serving average, 31 blocks (24 solo), 135 digs and 20 assists. She earned the Cape and Islands League Lighthouse MVP. She had a match with 25 plus kills in the first round of tournament play. For her career, she had 391 career kills, 316 total points with more than half those from aces (164 aces), 227 digs, and 50 blocks.
“Gerlach is an impact player who leads the team in kills, aces, blocks, and digs,” Sturgis West head coach Dana Gerlach said. “Whether in-system or out-of-system, front row or back row, Brodie finds a way to terminate the ball. She is an offensive and defensive asset with a high volleyball IQ.”
Her most memorable night was Senior Night, when they swept their rival Sturgis East. Her most memorable play was blocking every single hitter during the first round of the tournament. She also co-founded and co-runs the West Math Team and plays tennis.
Second Team
Leah Barlow, Bourne
The senior captain is a middle hitter and has been on varsity the past two seasons, and finished this season with 92 service points, 41 kills, and 108 digs.
“Although as a middle hitter, who is replaced in the back row with the libero, she is a very capable passer, digger and also a reliable server,”Moore said. “Leah was also responsible for helping lead this team and mentor the younger team players. She also plans on continuing to play in college.”
Carley May, Bourne
The junior captain middle and outside hitter was a key piece to the Lady Canalmen this season.
“Carley rounded out the captains and was always positive, demonstrating leadership by working hard daily and giving 100%. Carley will also be very influential in helping lead next year’s team.”
Adelyn Burlingame, Cape Tech
The senior outside hitter was selected as a Mayflower Athletic Conference Small Vocational Division All-Star.
Laura Feliz De Jesus, Cape Tech
The senior middle hitter was selected as a MAC Small Vocational Division All-Star.
Delia Roulston, Falmouth
The senior libero finished her final varsity season with 55 aces, a 88.6% serving, and 174 digs.
“Delia is a two-year varsity libero and defensive specialist,” Shea said. “Delia led the team on defense and at the serving line. Her ability to read the other team and her energy are top notch.”
Maggie McLean, Falmouth
As a junior middle hitter, McLean contributed 20 aces, 77 kills, 25 blocks, and had a 91.5% serving.
“Maggie is a two-year varsity middle hitter. She leads the defense at the net. Maggie is a source of positive energy and strong work ethic. She always pushes herself and encourages others to keep improving.
Alice O’Bannion, Nantucket
O’Bannion was a player on defense for the Whalers this season. She had 10 blocks against Falmouth and 10 kills and five blocks against Bridgewater-Raynham.
Rosanna Sullivan, St. John Paul II
The senior captain played at outside hitter and produced 139 kills, 90 aces, and 261 digs. She was selected as a Cape and Islands League All-Star. She finished her JPII career with 333 kills, 499 digs, and 211 aces in three seasons.
“From the moment Rosanna walked into this gym, she proved that hard work and dedication pays off,” Shannon and Haley Kennedy-Cabral said. “Rosanna’s consistent strength on the outside assisted in developing growth within the JPII program and setting a precedent for the future.”
Charlotte Sturgis, St. John Paul II
The senior middle hitter had 93 kills, 13 aces, 29 digs, and 16 blocks this season, and was named as a Cape and Islands League All-Star
She concluded her JPII career with 159 kills, 31 blocks, and 33 aces in three years.
“Following her freshman year, Charlotte took a break from volleyball, but was eager to return her junior year,” Shannon and Haley Kennedy-Cabral said. “Charlotte picked up right where she left off, proving that she deserved a spot on the court. Charlotte consistently motivated her team to raise the bar and perform at their highest level of competition.”
Ella McCabe, Sandwich
As a senior outside hitter, McCabe had 37 aces, 140 kills, seven blocks, and 166 digs.
She finished her career at Sandwich with 15 aces, 280 kills, and 68 blocks.
“Ella has been a force on the court,” Leite said. “Her passing skills, digging skills, and of course her hitting, have helped the team immensely throughout the years. Ella’s consistency, athleticism, and determination has been demonstrated even more this year.”
Alanna Schreibeis, Sandwich
In her final high school season at middle hitter, Schreibeis had 27 aces, 134 kills, and 15 blocks. She concluded her Sandwich career with 121 aces, 219 kills, and 55 blocks.
“Alanna in the middle has been a huge block,” Leite said. “When Alanna gets up there, no ball is coming over. Alanna has grown so much and has had the second most kills on the team this year. She’s very athletic and focused on the court.”
Samantha VanBeber, Sturgis West
The senior setter had 230 assists (4.7 assists per set), a 93.4% serving with 177 service points, including 45 aces. After an honorable mentions last season, VanBeber earned Cape & Islands All-League team honor this season. In her two-year career, she totaled 416 assists, 283 career points, 89 aces, 127 digs and six kills.
“Her positive energy and consistent serving was key to Sturgis West’s success,” Coach Gerlach said. “As starting server, she once served 14 in a row before the other team was able to side-out.
Chase Liimatainen, Sturgis West
In her senior campaign at outside hitter, co-captain Liimatainen had 130 digs, 204 service receptions, 30 kills, 55 service points and 23 aces. She ended her two-year career with 232 digs, 76 aces, and 444 receptions.
“She has good court sense and is able to adjust defense to cover changing hitting angles,” Coach Gerlach said. “One of the team’s strong hitters. Chase joined the team as a junior, but made an impact immediately.”
