Here we sit, more than a month removed from the volleyball season, amidst the glow of the Christmas lights and decorative ornaments, ready to pass judgment on the completed campaign.
The passage of time has afforded the sports staff at The Daily News the chance to properly digest, reflect upon and assess the season that was. Though area teams again fell short of district and state titles against challengers from the south and the north, the season wasn’t short of team success.

This year’s TDN All-Area volleyball team was led by Royal Grafton and Michelle Mury of Kelso along with Marissa Stacey and Whitney Nailon of R.A. Long.
The Kelso Hilanders came from outside preseason prognosticators’ foresight to tie a loaded Prairie Falcons squad for the 3A Greater St. Helens League title with just one loss in league play. Toutle Lake likewise pushed Adna for supremacy atop the Central 2B League standings all season long before falling one game shy of the title. The Fighting Ducks head-to-head loss to the Pirates was the deciding factor.

Of course there were other surprises and disappointments along the way. Kalama and Clatskanie, both sporting young, inexperienced varsity teams, both reached the playoffs. Kalama made a second straight state tournament appearance even after graduating an entire starting lineup and replacing its coach from the previous season.
Disappointment was felt from Naselle to Longview and Kelso to Castle Rock as teams fell just shy of competing in their respective state tournaments. Those sad endings aside, this past volleyball season saw scores of athletes shine on the floor. Their performances carried their schools to winning seasons. Many of those athletes played in their first varsity season, changed positions and were named to their respective All-League teams.
Additionally, a pair of coaches stood out above the rest for their ability to get the most from their cast of talent. With that in mind, The Daily News would like to recognize 14 athletes and two coaches for their performances by including them on our All Area team.

Just a sophomore, Grafton was elevated to a starting role with the Hilanders in 2023 and quickly established herself as an instrumental figure in her team’s ability to win points thanks to her all-around game. Grafton went from a little-used freshman to an irreplaceable piece who was named the team MVP by season’s end.
Grafton finished the year with 222 kills on a .189 hitting efficiency and 273 digs. She also finished the season rated as a 2.1 passer in serve receive.
“(Royal) is consistent, strategic, athletic and smart,” Kelso coach Michelle Mury said. “She can see the court and place the ball where they are not. (She is a) mature player, well beyond her years, who plays at a high-level club and it shows.”
Grafton was named to the 3A Greater St. Helens first team and will no doubt be a leader of the Hilanders program in her junior and senior seasons.

R.A. Long’s Marissa Stacey (red jersey) celebrates with her teammates after the Lumberjills scored a point against Black Hills in the first-round matchup of the District IV 2A volleyball tournament on Thursday, Nov. 2, at Tumwater High School
Elevated to the starting libero position for her senior year, Stacey was not only a defensive leader for R.A. Long with 225 digs and a 2.3 passer rating in the back row, she was also a team leader who helped carry her team to a top-three finish in a loaded 2A Greater St. Helens League despite injuries to the lineup.
“Marissa is a stellar defensive player and really stepped up in so many ways for our program this year,” R.A. Long coach Whitney Nailon said. “Her ability to lead is unmatched and was exactly what we needed this year.”
Stacey also had 54 assists and 46 aces while being named the Defensive MVP of the 2A GSHL.
“She plays with tenacity and saw an opportunity to be our libero and worked for it,” Nailon added. “She truly is the definition of what being in the weight room and playing club volleyball can do for a high school season.”
Coaches of the year
Michelle Mury, Kelso and Whitney Nailon, R.A. Long
It was hard to separate the work done by coaches Mury and Nailon this fall as both were tabbed as Coach of the Year in their respective leagues.
While R.A. Long returned the majority of its roster from a team that suffered an early exit at the 2A district tournament in 2022, it also lost an all-league performer in senior outside hitter Kamia Tootoosis-Didier in the first week of the season. That forced the team to completely rework its offense and defense, as it lacked a direct substitute for Tootoosis-Didier’s two-way role.

The R.A. Long volleyball team huddles during a league match against Columbia River on Tuesday, Sep. 19.
Anthony Dion
The Lumberjills played 12 games without Tootoosis-Didier, including the game against Ridgefield in which she suffered her pregame injury, going 7-5. Four of those losses came to the eventual 2A State champions in Columbia River and runners-up from Ridgefield.
The ability to adjust — for girls like Harli Witham, Erin White, Macy Graichen and Evelyn Ofstun all to take on new roles and excel — enabled the Jills to finish third in the 2A GSHL standings before falling short of State in the winner-to-Yakima/loser-out round of the district tournament.
Mark Morris coach Carmen Hewitt, a former R.A. Long assistant, witnessed Nailon’s job leading the Jills from right across the lake.
“Whitney is an amazing volleyball coach. She has built an incredible culture which has inspired athletes to reach incredible heights,” said Hewitt. “She gives so much to not just her program, but our community in general.”

Kelso coach Michelle Mury addresses her team in a huddle between sets.
The story was different from the start, but had a similar ending, for Mury and Kelso. The Hilanders lost six seniors from a ‘22 team that finished seventh in the 3A state tournament and returned just one starter in senior middle Olivia Chilton. Coach Mury managed to formulate a strong defensive and passing team — making up for its lack of height and experience at the net — in order to thrive in the regular season.
Kelso finished tied with Prairie at 7-1 atop the 3A GSHL standings to share the league title.
After losing the seeding tiebreaker to Prairie, Kelso was handed the No. 10 seed in the district playoffs. Thus, it drew the No. 1 North Thurston in the quarterfinals followed by Spanaway Lake in the consolation bracket. And if that wasn’t hard enough, the Hilanders saw their team MVP Royal Grafton go down in warmups of their postseason opener with an injury. That left her out for the remainder of the tournament while Kelso fell just short of a return to Yakima.

Natalie Bair gets ready to pass a ball to her Hilander teammates in their match vs. Camas on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
Dan Rosenfield
Bair stepped into the starting setter role this season and helped Kelso’s offense become more versatile in the absence of its top hitters from previous seasons. Bair flourished from the Hilanders’ first game with her ability to set to each pin, spread the ball around to Kelso’s group of hitters and with her adept ability to place a timely dump shot.
To that point, Bair’s 60 kills on 69 attacks with one error earned her an .855 hitting efficiency. Bair finished the season with 387 assists and 157 digs with a 1.7 passer rating and was selected for the 3A GSHL first team.
Coach Mury described her senior captain as “strategic, smart and skilled.”

Toutle Lake’s Grace Hadaller delivers a kill against the Okanogan block in the Day 2 match at the 2B State volleyball tournament on Thursday, Nov. 9.
Anthony Dion
Hadaller stood out for the Fighting Ducks all season long as the team went 9-1 in league play to finish second behind Adna before earning a 2B state tournament berth.
In her senior year, Hadaller produced 300 kills on 733 attacks for a .260 hitting efficiency. On defense, Hadaller provided 179 digs and on serve, she had 35 aces and a 90 percent service rate and was a C2BL second team pick.
“Grace has always been a power hitter… and in the two years I’ve coached her she has grown a lot,” Toutle Lake coach Shanna Ford said. “She not only was an amazing hitter for me, but she progressed in her defensive skills and played back row this season.”

Kelso senior Olivia Chilton slams a shot over the Heritage block during the first set of the team’s match on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Chilton had nine kills as Kelso won in three sets on its senior night.
Anthony Dion
Standing 6-foot-1, Chilton was the lone returner with height for Kelso this season. She returned to the middle block position tasked with not only shutting down the best hitters the 3A GSHL had to offer, but with adding some power to Kelso’s own net attack.
Chilton often was a dominant force at the net, able to get in the opponent’s head as her blocking prowess forced teams to completely alter their attacking strategy in the middle of a game.
Chilton finished with 214 kills on 513 attacks, which was good for a .261 hitting efficiency to lead Kelso. She also posted a team-best 60 blocks and was picked for the 3A GSHL first team.
Coach Mury noted Chilton’s drive to compete.
“She’s hungry to improve (and) committed to play at the next level,” Mury said. “She puts in extra time before and after practice.”

Kendal Dean sets the ball for Toutle Lake in its quarterfinal match against Kalama in the 2B District IV tournament at Adna High School on Saturday, Oct. 28.
Just a sophomore, Dean took over as setter for the Ducks this season and from Game 1 had the team working to its strengths. Dean was picked for the C2BL first team after delivering a whopping 642 assists, 253 digs, 22 blocks and served at a 94.75 percent efficiency.
“Kendal is an all-around athlete… She brings so much to our team that we would not have been so successful without her,” Ford said. “Only being a sophomore and being so successful already, she is going to continue to grow and get better in upcoming years.”

Kamia Tootoosis-Didier hits the ball over the net during R.A. Long’s loss to Tumwater in the 2A District IV Tournament on Nov. 4, in Tumwater.
Tootoosis-Didier suffered a high-ankle sprain in the first week of the season which caused her to miss six weeks. In spite of that, Tootoosis-Didier was able to work her way back through a tireless rehabilitation process to impact the Jills’ playoff push down the stretch. Despite missing more than half the season, Tootoosis-Didier was selected to the 2A GSHL first team by the league’s coaches.
“(Kamia) came back at the right moment for us and started out hot against Black Hills,” said Nailon. “I’ve never had a player get injured and still bring their name up at the all-league (meeting) (as I did with) Kamia for first team and it wasn’t even a doubt on anyone’s mind.”
Tootoosis-Didier finished the season with 104 kills on a .271 hitting efficiency and 58 digs in eight games. She also passed at a 2.3 passer rating.
“She’s a player you’re happy to have on your side not just offensively, but defensively, too,” Nailon added. “I’m proud of her resilience and the grit she showed by coming off an injury to dominate matches.”
Taylor Hoggatt, libero, Kalama
Hoggatt, a junior, emerged as Kalama’s leader on defense a year after the senior-laden Chinooks dominated the Central 2B League en route to a fourth-place finish at State.

Kalama defensive specialist Taylor Hoggatt goes up for a swing during the Chinooks’ match against Castle Rock on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The Chinooks lost in three sets.
Kalama played with an entirely new starting varsity lineup in 2023, and Hoggatt was the central figure in the back row. Despite the inexperience, Hoggatt and her team surprised many observers with a return to the state tournament.
After posting a 2.3 serve receive average and nearly 20 digs per game, she was picked to the C2BL first team for her efforts.

McNew finished with 202 kills on 597 attacks for a .173 hitting efficiency in her junior year. She also had 253 digs and 40 assists to go with a 92.2 percent service rate and was a 3A GSHL honorable mention.
Coach Mury called McNew “a great team player,” and noted she always plays with “all-out effort.”
